Jim Deal

Jim played the guitar in rock bands back in the late 80's, early 90's and by 1996 had lost interest in trying to write songs that maintained a rigid structure. This led to the Intonations, which were the first experiments in free improvisation with Mike Rand. "We would basically pick up any instrument, inanimate object or whatever we felt might make an interesting sound and hit record". This process continued and became more elaborate over time. Other like minded musicians were invited to join in these experiments and by 2001 the culmination of this process became the Sub.con sessions, which included fellow musicians Jeff Mueller aka Xaxis Wye, and Scott Bennett. Jim was also playing with local experimentalists Entropic Advance at this time.

Sometime in 2000 Jim bought his first computer and began the long uphill battle to become proficient in creating music using software. Mike Rand was creating music on his computer at this time as well and by 2002 they began to collaborate on some tracks. At some point during this collaboration Zero Tapestry came into being and the decision was made to create a full length album, which brings us to the present. The album, "A gravity of it's own" was released in March 2006, and in many ways is a return to a more structure based form of composition combined with many improvisational elements. More to come.

Mike Rand

Mike started playing the Guitar when he was pretty young. Mike ended up in a few Death Metal bands in the Salt Lake City area. He eventually moved to Seattle where he started exploring broader musical horizons and new instruments. Together with Jim Deal they explored the arena of improvisational music. This lead to the Sub.Con project. After years of jamming, Jim and Mike sat down to create Zero Tapestry. The debut CD from Zero Tapestry marks an important milestone in Mike's career. This will be his first official release. It also marks the launching of Zero Tapestry Productions which Mike hopes to use as a vehicle to release various audio and visual projects that he has been working on.
